Mixed Media: Collage & Oil

This process developed during the COVID lockdown, shaped by a period of focused experimentation and reflection. Influenced in part by my great uncle, Michael Vollbracht, I began exploring collage as a foundation—eventually building a method that merges found materials with oil painting.

I begin with antique paper materials—maps, letters, postcards, sheet music and National Geographic magazines—collaged to form the foundation of each piece.

After gathering antique ephemera, I prepare the surface using cradled wood panels. Each panel is sealed, sanded, and primed with acrylic gesso. Once dry, I sketch the composition in vine charcoal which allows me to rework lines easily.

Once I am happy with the composition, I reinforce the lines with black marker and begin adhering the collage elements using a matte gel medium.

From there, I build in layers of oil paint using a glazing technique. Painting one thin layer over another still allowing the collaged elements to show through.
